At which school in the district do you teach?

I teach at the JHS.

 What subject(s) do you teach?

Math. This year I teach pre-algebra and geometry.

What grade (s) do you teach?

8th and 9th.

How long have you been teaching at SASD?

This is year 20! I don’t understand the math, how is this possible if I’m only 29??

What is your favorite part about teaching?

My favorite part of teaching is helping students understand the math content I teach. Math has a bad reputation and many students have already resigned themselves to the idea that “I am just not good at math” by the time I see them in 8th grade. I like to help break down tough concepts into bite-sized chunks and gradually have them work their way to the big idea. I find that students typically surprise themselves with just how much math they really can do and I enjoy that process.

If you could teach another subject what would it be and why?

I have also taught science in the district. I enjoyed teaching physical science because the curriculum has some overlapping math concepts that are used in both courses. It was fun to teach both because I was easily able to communicate with my students which concepts were important for both classes.

What do you find most challenging about being a teacher?

Teaching challenging math concepts at 7:20 a.m. before most brains (mine included!) have really woken up!!! :)

What is one piece of advice you would share with your students?

Seek help when you need it. You might be surprised how many people are happy to help you through whatever it is that you need — academic concerns, social concerns, personal issues, etc. Teachers have an innate helping mentality.
