NAACP club promotes diversity at SHS
October 4, 2022
“NAACP” stands for “National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.”
This national organization was first created in America in 1909. The NAACP’s mission is to achieve equity, political rights, and social inclusion by advancing policies and practices that expand human and civil rights, eliminate discrimination, and accelerate the well-being, education, and economic security of Black people and all persons of color.
SHS started its own club here in 2020. The club focuses on promoting diversity in the district and community.
“NAACP promotes equality for students within the school,” said officer Niceidy Green, a junior. “Members are developing leadership skills through various discussions and events.”
Ms. Nadeen Edwards is the adviser for this club. Senior Cayla Wheatley is the president, Senior Gabriella Vasquez is the vice-president, Junior Niceidy Green is the treasurer, and Junior Isaiah Louis-Jacques is the secretary. This club also has two members responsible for social media outreach: Juniors Luka Konklin and Eli Badillo.
NAACP meets every other Monday after school in Ms. Edwards’ room, B207. They focus on discussions, fundraisers, volunteering, and various ways to promote diversity. A great example is their collaboration with another SHS club: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), which hosted the “Fall into Diversity” event that took place at SHS on September 30.
