On May 7th, 2024, eight members of the Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) club attended a Tobacco Resistance Unit day at Pennsylvania’s capital, Harrisburg.
Led by advisor Melissa Koehler, students Essam Alrefai (10), Benjamin Becker (10), Anthony Borrero (11), Marlo El-Bassiouni (10), Arda Gocuklu (10), Kelysse Jackson (10), Athena Skarlis (10), and Nina Ruan (11) attended.
Club members started the day meeting with PA Representatives Tarah Probst and Maureen Madden. They discussed the importance of funding for the prevention of tobacco use and updating the Clean Indoor Air Act, which would include places such as casinos, truck stops, and bars.
After students met with legislators, they learned more about the harmful effects of tobacco and how to help combat it. The day was very long, but the club made a lot of progress.
