Several SHS newspaper students went on a field trip to Wilkes University. They were excited to join Wilkes for their Media Day.
The students met up after homeroom and were greeted by Mountaineer advisor, Jessica Appolo, who had gifted them hot chocolate for the one-hour bus ride. The students shuffled onto the bus and spent the time chatting, relaxing, and napping.
Together the class headed into the university and waited in the TV studio while waiting for other schools to arrive. It was there the students took photos, observed the different sets, and were split into school groups for a tour of the media center.
From there, group one returned to the TV room for their first station where they practiced broadcasts. While two students cohosted while reading from a script, other students played with the technical aspects of the broadcast behind the scenes.
Their second station was in the BEACON (Wilkes University’s newspaper) room where they were taken around campus to practice interviewing students.
While group one did this, group two enjoyed both of their stations.
They first went to the ZEBRA workshop where they learned about public communication.
For the second workshop, students practiced Speech and Debate where they watched presentations on different topics.
The groups reconvened in the TV room, then a brief walk about the campus and Starbucks when headed back to SHS and arrived just in time for the Homecoming Pep assesmbly.
