Veteran’s Day was first called a federal holiday in 1938 and became known as “Veteran’s Day” in 1954. It is celebrated on November 11 which marks the day the armistice was signed for World War I.
In elementary schools across the nation, children write to troops, thanking them for their service and how much they are appreciated.
As the grades advance, less and less is done, however; our school’s Community Connections Club hosted a flag fundraiser to honor those who have sacrificed and served our country.
There is a field of flags on Stroudsburg High School’s (SHS) lawn where every flag represents a story. Kids were able to purchase a flag for a veteran they knew for $10.
When Ms. Kim Paradis in the guidance office, formerly in the Navy, was asked what she thinks about all SHS does for Veteran’s Day, she said, “Ms. Nowosad and Ms. McIntyre did a great job this year, but that’s the first year it was done here. I believe we should do more, but there aren’t a lot of veterans in the district.”
This tradition might turn annual because of the amazing turnout that it got. Every beautiful flag on SHS’s front lawn represents someone’s untold story.
They look marvelous when the wind is blowing, flapping America’s colors, reminding us of all the people we will never know, that have fought for our country to be a peaceful place.
