At which school in the district do you teach?
This year I started teaching at the Junior High and recently transferred to the high school.
What subject(s) do you teach?
For 27 years I taught marine science, invertebrate biology, and biology at the Junior High School. Since I have made the move to the high school I teach only biology classes.
How long have you been teaching at SASD?
27 years!
What is your favorite part about teaching?
I enjoy being busy, and teaching is definitely a busy job. No two days are the same. Coaching two varsity sports makes the days even busier. I absolutely love being busy!!!
What is one piece of advice you would share with your students?
Do your best to stay away from drama.
Who do you look up to?
I always looked up to my old calculus teacher, Dr. Lennick, from Schuylkill Haven. She was a very demanding teacher, but taught with a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and passion. She treated each person with a lot of respect and really got to know her students. I learned more in her class than any other class I took in college or high school. I often think of her when I am teaching or coaching.
What is your proudest achievement?
My proudest achievement would be working this job for 27 years and never having any regrets or doubts about my career choice. I still enjoy coming to work each and every day.
Why did you choose to become a teacher?
When I was in college, I tutored students in math. My students found me quite helpful and said I explained tough concepts and made it easy to learn. I found this type of challenge addictive and thought I could do this for a living.
What makes you smile?
Watching athletes perform well in the sports I coach makes me smile. Watching students succeed in my classroom makes me smile as well.
What is something your students have taught you?
Students have taught me that there are so many different ways of looking at things, even things I taught for many years.
