On Wednesday, January 29, the Stroudsburg Boys’ Wrestling team ended their season on a high note with a win against Pleasant Valley, finalizing their regular season record at 13-7.
Rolling into 2025, the team was 4-4, seemingly unable to string together multiple wins in a row, following each win with frustratingly close losses.
Hungry to be the best team in the mountain, they traveled to Upper Merion High School on January 4 to the Battle of Valley Forge tournament. The Mountaineers went home undefeated, going 5-0 with multiple 20+ point wins. With the first-place finish, Stroudsburg successfully sent a statement to the rest of the mountain, skyrocketing their record to 9-4 and cementing themselves as the top-seeded team in the EPC North.
The rest of the season would be full of trials and tribulations, with next week having back-to-back duels on January 8 and 9 against the Pocono Mountain West Panthers and the Northampton Konkrete Kids. Dismantling the Panthers by 30+ points and falling to the K-Kids with an upsetting final score of 10-55.
On January 25, Stroudsburg took a trip to Lehighton High School to take on the Coal Cracker Tournament. Only one wrestler, Jack Jasionowicz, ‘26, placed, yet multiple made it to the second day and were only one win away from finishing with a medal.
Jasionowicz, the team’s 107-pounder battled his way to a fourth-place finish and was only a couple points away from placing even higher. The junior leads the team in wins this season with over 25. Coach Jones states, “Jack has shown tremendous improvement throughout the season and is looking to make a big run in the postseason.”.
Ending the season 13-7, the Mountaineers had massive success in tournament play, going 8-1, yet could never find their footing in regular season duals, finishing with a dual record of 5-6.
Jones said, “We have 13 wins this year which is a huge success given the inexperience we have as a team. Every kid has stepped up in a huge way to help us get those wins” Jones says, “These kids have made a great impact on the program and have paved the way for the future of Stroudsburg Wrestling.”
Jones, a first-year head coach, has a young team with a bright future though, having only four senior starters: Hunter Brown, ‘25, Zach Berwick, ‘25, Gavin Bunn, ’25, and Ilya Ogden, ’25.
Berwick hit 100 career wins earlier this season and ended the regular season with 114. He has placed top six in districts each year of his career, and based on his performance this season, he is headed for another placement. Brown has been a consistent varsity wrestler since his freshman year and has hit the 20-win mark multiple times in his wrestling career.
Three wrestlers on the team eclipsed the 20-win mark this season, being Jasionowicz, Albert Bialasiewicz, ‘26, and Berwick. Other top performers on the team include Shaun Evans, ’26, James Ennis, ’27, Giovanni Alvarez, ’27, Leonard DiMaria, ’27, Ahmad Albabili, ’27, Zion Essington, ’26, and Alex Ball, ’26.
