One organization has the right idea when it comes to celebrating their heritage. Ai??Instead of choosing one specific month, the Hispanic community has chosen two enjoy celebrate their heritage over two months.

From September 15 to October 15, Hispanics are celebrating their culture and how far they have come in society. September 15 is the anniversary of independence of five Latin Countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua). Organizations such as Flecha commemorated Hispanics for their contributions to their heritage and the United States on September 17 at Hughes Library. Flecha also hosts other events celebrating Hispanics, particularly around the Christmas time when they and host a dinner and sing carols.

SHS Spanish teacher Ms. Amanda Nicholson is also excited about the idea of Hispanic heritage.

ai??? I attended several events hosted by Flecha usually around Christmas time, and it’s really fun.”

Some activities that Hispanics participate in are making carnival masks, and making traditional zapotec rug paintings. With all of the activities, another one is cooking up some of your favorite Hispanic meals. Generally churros, guacamole, quesadillas, rice dishes, and rice puddings are made during this month.

“Usually my mom makes special Spanish food likeAi??arroz con leche y mazamorra around these times, it’s really good”Ai??said senior Jonathan Valderrama.

It brings about new ideas with new people who have different experiences and cultures for us to learn about. Hispanic or not, feel the need to embrace other cultures because youai??i??re likely to find something very intriguing that sparks an interest. Throughout the month, Hispanics will cook and listen to traditional music from Spain.

Hispanic Heritage month is one of many culture celebrating months in America. Like Black History Month, it brings attention to those unaware of their heritage and all the different cultures can be found all around Stroudsburg.
