Track tryouts for girls and guys were hosted last week at the SHS stadium for the 2025 spring season. The co-ed season schedule is the same for both teams.
The track team is led by Brett Youngken, who also assists shotput. Jake Cirillo and Jordan Fernandez are the javelin coaches; Nikolaos Kontos is the pole vaulting coach; Adam Carter is the jumping coach, Geoffrey Zimmerman is the discus coach; Ken Sickler is coaching hurdles; Eric Foti is the long-distance coach; James Miller is coaching shotput and long jump; William Walter coaches sprinting; Madison Harding coaches high jump.
The ’24 track season was successful for the Mountaineers. They had an undefeated championship season.
Assistant coach Nikolaos Kontos in his second year of coaching the pole vault team hopes to “stay undefeated” this season and keep improving the team. He looks forward to the EPC championship meet and senior night.
Coach Kontos strongly believes he will push the team through with his favorite quote,¨ If you want to be a champion, you need to do things that will get you there when no one else is watching.¨
The track team also has new managers who hope to help the team thrive this season. The ’25 track season managers are Nina Ruan and Price Joseph.
According to Ruan, being a manager for track requires her to take attendance, make sure the team is stocked up on water, and distribute uniforms. Ruan’s goals for this track season are to see the members of the team achieve their personal goals and encourage them to do so.
Ruan also shared that she is most excited about the first official meet.
The Mountaineers’ first meet is on Saturday, March 15, away at Parkland. You can follow the SHS track team on Instagram @sburg_trackandfield.
