Starting tonight, Major League Baseball will begin its second annual prospect showcase, Spring Breakout.
MLB teams prepare rosters of their top prospects and young stars to take on other teams. Last season was the first rendition of this event, with notable names such as 2024 National League Rookie of the Year, Paul Skenes, young Nationals outfielders, James Wood and Dylan Crews, and Orioles second baseman, Jackson Holliday.
Different from last season, these prospects will be playing full nine-inning games, compared to the seven-inning contests of last season. Each MLB team plays at least once, with the Cubs and Nationals featured twice.
Here are some of the top things to look for in this year’s games:
Red Sox young stars
Red Sox top prospects, Roman Anthony (#2 MLB Prospect/#1 Red Sox), Kristian Campbell (MLB #7, BOS #2), and Marcelo Mayer (MLB #12, BOS #3), will all be showcased tonight as the Red Sox take on the Rays. Campbell and Anthony will both be fighting to break camp with the Boston major league team when they open their season up against the Texas Rangers. Boston also comes into this season with big additions pitchers Garrett Crochet and Walker Bueheler, and infielder Alex Bregman.
Guardians top pick
The top pick from the 2024 MLB Draft, Travis Bazzana will be featured in the Guardians lineup during this weekend’s Spring Breakout. Bazzana, out of Oregon State, posted a .765 OPS with Single-A Lake County. He is a candidate to be Cleveland’s opening-day second baseman after the Guardians traded away Andres Gimenez to the Toronto Blue Jays this offseason.
Young starters shine
Rockies and White Sox top prospects, Chase Dollander and Noah Schultz, will both be big names to watch this weekend. Both have a good chance to break camp with their major league teams come the end of this month. Dollander was drafted by the Rockies with their first overall pick back in 2023 while Schultz was the White Sox top pick back in 2022.
