Masayoshi Takanaka, a Chinese-Japanese guitarist known for his unique style of music, was born in Tokyo, Japan, on March 27, 1953. Later during the 1960’s he joined his first band called “Escape” where he performed in multiple U.S. military bases in Tokyo, according to the Discogs website.
He gained his popularity during the 1970s through the 1980s, when he produced multiple albums. “Can I Sing” (1983), “An Insatiable High” (1977), “Seychelles” (1976), “Takanaka” (1977), and my personal favorite, “Brazilian Skies” (1978). These were five of his greatest records, and he produced more than 20 albums in his career. His discography can be found at the Discogs website.
Well known for his jazz-fusion style, where he combines rock, jazz, and pop. His music is categorized in the “city-pop” genre. Although he stands apart for me, he is very unique, and I have yet to find music that truly has the same feel as his. My first time listening to him, I was just compelled by his ability to combine so many genres and genuinely make it sound good.
He also has a unique style in general, and his album covers portray that. In his “All of Me” album, he is dressed in a bright yellow jumpsuit while he skydives above an island. In his “Takanaka” album, he is dressed in an all-red suit with a black bow tie, posing with his guitar. His style of clothing, the way he choreographs his album cover it’s iconic.
Takanaka is currently 72 years old, but it’s clear that his career is not over just yet. He most recently performed live in the U.S. in Los Angeles, California, in March 2025. He still performs live in Japan from time to time. His shows can be found on Setlist or Ticket Master.
Masayoshi Takanaka is not just another artist; he, alongside many other “city-pop” artists, created a unique genre of music and style by combining various elements of music. He incorporated jazz, rock, and pop together while taking inspiration like Latin music, making his songs very diverse in sound. There isn’t a mainstream artist right now that has the same quality of music that Takanaka has; he is one of a kind, even in his genre.
If you like pop, rock, Jazz, or house music, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy Takanaka’s music.
