Despite the disappointing forecast for the week of May 5 to May 9, the Varsity Sports Club at Stroudsburg High School hosted its 40th annual Fun & Fitness Day at the SHS stadium on May 8, 2025. From 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., 4th graders from all schools at SASD enjoyed many outdoor activities that encourage good physical health.
Varsity S is a sports-based club at SHS, advised by Kimberly Brown and Elwood Perry, both physical education/health teachers at SHS. They work hard behind the scenes of every event that the club hosts or assists in, making it enjoyable for everyone involved. Whether it’s made to benefit the elementary schools, middle schools, special education, or our very own Stroudsburg High School, Brown and Perry put their all to make the fun happen.
“It was really fun and good to come together to make a memorable experience for the kids.” says Charlotte Kish, ’26
More specifically, at Fun & Fitness Day, the advisors put together 12 stations for the entire day. Student advisors arrived at the stadium after homeroom, and student volunteers reported at the stadium around 8:30 a.m. Volunteers were allowed to choose which activity station they’d like to run. Up to ten members of the club could run a single station. The children played games such as “What time is it, Mr. Fox?”, outdoor water relay, pull-ups, push-ups, duck duck goose, meter dashes, sharks and minnows, long jump, dance party, dizzy bats, tag, and of course, a fan favorite–parachute. During the day, the 4th graders were offered lunch at 11:45 a.m., in between the 2 rotations.
Furthermore, Varsity S volunteers in all kinds of events leading up to their final big two: Fun & Fitness Day and Mountie Challenge. Members perform skits, participate in field days, PSSA celebrations, or assist in events at SHS. The dodgeball and volleyball powderpuff were assisted by many members from Varsity S. They meet a few times a month to plan events that encourage outdoor physical activity or mindfulness in some aspect, typically focusing on the younger age groups.
Fun & Fitness Day was unfortunately cut short due to the weather. Though it was only cut a few minutes, the fourth graders were disappointed.
Students who have earned a varsity letter in the previous grade now have the opportunity to be in the club. For example, if you lettered in a sport in your junior year, you will be inducted into the club early in your senior year. Striving to become a member of Varsity S is a phenomenal way to get involved with your school and peers. Academic and athletic students are able to come together not just to have fun, but to work for something beneficial to those younger than them. Also, it gives the younger generation something to look forward to.
