According to Utah Valley University, Kirk was shot at about 12:10 p.m. on Sept 10, 2025. local time in the school’s courtyard. Hundreds of supporters and debaters alike fled the scene after the single shot was fired. He was reported dead about an hour after being taken to the hospital.

According to ABC, Kirk was shot from a nearby rooftop, which was about 100-200 yards away from the tent that Kirk was sitting under.

The situation sparked public discourse as people discussed the morality of the situation. Videos from the event, and of the shooting itself, quickly flooded social media platforms.

Government officials on both sides sent prayers to Kirk and his family. On X, President Trump expressed that, “No one understood or had the heart of the youth in the United States better than Charlie.”

NPR  writes that 22-year-old Tyler Robinson was detained in a county jail after turning himself over to police in connection with the assassination of the conservative influencer on Wednesday afternoon. Police continue to investigate the incident.

There will be a vigil held for Kirk at the Stroudsburg Courthouse on Sept 17.
