On September 17, 2025, Stroudsburg High School’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) had its name temporarily changed to Student Support Initiative (SSI). This change occurred due to the ongoing national controversy over the terms DEI.
The sudden change to the club’s name left the advisors and members confused. They had already had a setup planned for their table for the activity fair, but due to the name change being put into effect, they couldn’t use any of the already prepared materials.
This was why there had not been an SSI table. Advisors Ms. Sarah Cepin and Ms. Bethany Wert did not want to promote a club’s name that did not represent what the club did.
The following day, the advisors decided to officially change the club’s name into the Mosaic Club. This name was picked because, like a mosaic piece, the club brings different of people with different backgrounds together.
Even with the club’s name being changed, they plan to continue informing others about differences among people.
“I feel like the name change was not needed for us to continue the club, but the new name ‘Mosaic club’ does fit what we do, since like a mosaic we are putting the pieces together,” expressed Cat Kramer, ’27, about the new change.
Public schools’ federal funds were threatened by the Trump administration if any violation of the civil rights law were broken. This includes the use of DEI, as it is seen to give advantages to one’s race.
10% of federal grants, provided by the federal government, go towards schools, with 90 percent of U.S school districts benefiting from these funds. The removal of this money would have a detrimental impact on the low-income community.
In another quote from Ms. Wert explaining the club’s events, “Our events include movie nights, chalk art activities, guest speaker series, board game days, paint nights, and collaborative projects such as creating bracelets to spread messages of harmony around the school.”
These events occur once a month and are a great way to connect and bond with peers.
