Student creating a hole into a maple tree in order to insert a spile, which is an essential device that allows the sap to pass through in order to obtain maple sap.

Maple tapping season is typically in mid-February to mid-April due to the sap being in a freeze-thaw cycle, where the sugar-rich sap moves and flows out of the tree through tap holes.

Students stand and listen to a detailed explanation on the difference between trees that can produce sap for syrup. They are taught a mnemonic device, MAD Horse, to help remember the four types of trees with opposite branching patterns. Trees such as maple, ash, dogwood, and horse chestnut that have opposite branching, are easier to find and typically used for making syrup due to their higher contents of sugar.

Tools that were typically brought by pilgrims during their expansion for land. This helped them with the creation of new tools, and making a new living in unfamiliar places. Having not been able to take many of their belongings with them, they received help from Native Americans already living on the land. Through this, they learnt about sap and how it can be formed into syrup and sugar. By using their more advanced cookware and tools, they were able to produce it in a more fast and efficient way.
