What is K-pop?
Korean popular music, commonly known as k-pop, is a form of music in South Korea. K-pop includes several subgenres of music, such as electronic, dance, R&B, and rock. Within the past few decades, k-pop has expanded beyond South Korea and into the United States. Because of its fresh and unique sound, the popularity of Korean pop music has skyrocketed. K-pop groups such as BTS, Blackpink, and Stray Kids now have a countless number of fans in the United States.
ILLIT’s Debut
ILLIT, a new k-pop group that debuted in March 2024, has gained a lot of popularity in such a short period of time. The group was first formed on the Korean JTBC show “R U Next?” This survival/reality-style show features up-and-coming k-pop girl groups. The winners of this competition are given once in a lifetime opportunities to become famous k-pop idols.
In September 2023, ILLIT won the show and the lineup of members was revealed. Originally, another trainee named Youngseo was supposed to be a part of ILLIT, but she left before the debut. ILLIT became the 3rd group to debut under Belift Studios and Hybe Labels (after Le Sserafim and NewJeans).
The Members
The five members of ILLIT are Iroha, Minju, Wonhee, Moka, and Yunah. They all have different roles and positions. Minju and Yunah are the Lead Vocalists of the group. Wonhee is the center and the Main Visual. Moka and Iroha are the Lead Dancers, but Iroha is also the “maknae” (the youngest member).
ILLIT’s Success
ILLIT’s sudden popularity can be attributed to TikTok and other social media platforms. In March 2024, their debut song Magnetic went viral on social media. TikTok users from all around the world imitated ILLIT’s choreography to the song. As a result, Magnetic debuted as No. 93 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Soon after their overnight success, ILLIT released the mini-album SUPER REAL ME. The tracklist includes Magnetic, My World, Midnight Fiction, and Lucky Girl Syndrome. Despite their very recent appearance, ILLIT has already gained a dedicated and loyal fan base. ILLIT’s supporters are eagerly awaiting their next release.
