On April 25, 2026, the Special Olympics was held at East Stroudsburg South High. Special Olympics allows students with disabilities to experience sports in their own way. It is important to create an environment where students can feel empowered and create a community.
Participants are buddied up with a student from their high school to assist them in their events. Each athlete receives their sports schedule at the beginning of the event. This includes events like races and other sport-specific events. The message of the Special Olympics is inclusion. It is hosted to bring everyone together to enjoy a field day. From concessions to volunteering, everyone plays an important role that brings it all together.
The Best Buddies Club members were sent off with fanfare as the Stroudsburg Marching Band played music all the way until the bus left the lot. Students and teachers in the hallways cheered them on as they were leaving.
Furthermore, to highlight autism, a prominent type of disability. Autism is caused when a child is in developmental stages and several genes receive mutations. In the U.S., autism is diagnosed in 1 in 31 children and 1 in 45 adults. For children with autism, life can be different, so remember to:
- Be patient
- Be kind
- Explain
- Be supportive
- Be clear
- Be aware of words and actions
- Make them feel safe
Stroudsburg participants had a day of fun and food as one athlete shared his experience. He participated in softball, long jump, and javelin. He got 1st in softball, 1st in long jump, and 5th in javelin.
