From Jacob Stroud originally founding Stroudsburg to Mini Thon raising money to help cancer patients; Stroudsburg along with its high school has developed over the years. Starting from the small school in Hamilton township to now a pillar of community on central Main Street.
Over the years Stroudsburg has changed greatly over the years. Along with this development came large changes to the school system and the high school.
Stroudsburg was founded in the 1730s when Jacob Stroud discovered the area and throughout the 1770s Stroudsburg saw the construction of fort Hamilton and fort Penn during the revolutionary war and the constitution of the Stroud mansion by the end of the 1700s. Stroudsburg was officially recognized and planned out in 1799.
As a part of this development and expansion the bell school was founded in the 1870s. The bell school is a one room school house located in Hamilton township. Being well preserved, it gives us a look into how schools functioned from the 1800s to the 1950s. After it closed it was reopened as a museum in 1964.
In 1876, B.F. Morey was the first recorded County Superintendent of Schools. One school that Morey had noted about was Keever’s Hill which was the first recorded school in the Stroud Township area. This school was later moved to Stroudsburg and hired Mr. Curtis, the first teacher. In honor of B.F. Morey, in 1925, a school was built named B.F. Morey Elementary School. The school teaches grades K to 4th and was built right across from where the new modern Stroudsburg High School stands.
The original Stroudsburg High School was built in 1882. It added eight rooms the following year and in the fall of 1926. On February 26 the high school was met with tragedy when a fire of unknown origins started, resulting in the destruction of the school and $300,000 in damages or $5,600,000 in damages today. Luckily there were no students or staff present because it was a holiday and no one was injured.
The fire in 1927 left the school with no choice but to relocate. After much deliberation a new spot was chosen, 1100 West Main Street, where the current Stroudsburg High School stands today. The new school was established in 1928.
The school remains in the same location on West Main Street. It serves as a landmark to go back in time and travel through the heart of Stroudsburg. It has a large impact on the local businesses, such as the Wawa nearby. Companies like Grandpa Joes have begun donating funds to the school. The modern day high school was built in 1928, lasting 80 years with no major change until 2008.
In May of 2008 the school decided to enforce a stricter dress code policy after they discovered that the current policy banning ripped and saggy pants and revealing clothing was not being followed. This new policy gave students a choice between navy blue pants or khakis and grey, black, maroon, or white polos. This same dress code policy is still in place today.
In June of 2010 the school began renovations aimed at creating more room for students and modernizing the old building. The renovations included a whole new wing of the building being added, and a new gymnasium with a capacity of 4,000, a library, media center, science labs, art rooms, workshops, and a film studio. When the project finished in November of 2014 it had the final cost of $93 million.
Stroudsburg has been incredible for the past 100 years regarding sports; from 1925 to 1951 T. Manning Curtis served as the high school basketball coach and went on a legendary coaching run. Even after his legendary coaching career we still have produced many stars like NFL Star Sebastian Joseph-Day. Stroudsburg’s achievements aren’t just sports, the high school’s biggest academic achievers are: Astronaut Byron Lichtenberg and U.S. ambassador to Malaysia Thomas Shoesmith.
From 2023-2024, the last count of students attending Stroudsburg High School today is 1,245 students. The newest clubs that have been added to the schools roster have been the Mosaic Club, Esports, and Dungeons and Dragons Club. Stroudsburg High School still forms events for students to attend such as dances and plays. Starting in 2012, the newest event was made called Mini Thon. In the end, from the Bell School, to the fire of the original school, and to the modern high school ; the Stroudsburg High School has developed significantly.
