Diyanna Schlaeger, Staff Writer

At which school in the district do you teach?

I work at Stroudsburg High School. I started off as a substitute teacher for all schools, but now I am full-time at the Stroudsburg High School.

What Subjects do you teach?

I do the ISS (In-School Suspension) in the ACE (Alternative Classroom) room.

What grades do you teach?

I work with students in Grades 10-12.

How long have you been teaching at SASD?

I have been working with the school district for 6 years.

What is the most rewarding lesson you have ever taught and why?

Think before you act. Your actions and words have consequences.  Take pride in what you do and how you present yourself to the world. Get up, get dressed and show up. Make an effort to do the right thing. Discipline yourself so that your conscience guides you to make the right choices and the right decisions.

What do you find most surprising about your job?

I think Stroudsburg High is a great place to start learning, molding, and shaping up into adulthood. I like that we have cultivated an atmosphere where school teaches you to be on time, dress appropriately, be responsible, think ahead, check up on yourself. It prepares you for the real world. Most surprising about my job is the number of repeat offenders. If you were caught breaking the rules the first time, the logic is to not do it again.

What do you find most challenging about being the ACE teacher?

The level of disrespect you can encounter on the job at any time.

What is the one piece of advice you would share with your students?

First and foremost I care tremendously about each and every student that walks through my door and I want nothing but the best for them. My hope is that they can overcome their challenges and become productive, honest can contributing members of their community and society as a whole. Your present circumstances do not define who you are or determine where you can go.

There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs, one step at a time. Make maximum use of limited resources, be open to help, support and encouragement, take the hand of each staff member that is willing to guide you.  Respect your teachers, listen to their advice, join clubs, sports — let your talents shine. Put in the hard work and keep going with resiliency, balance, growth, and awareness. Go make a difference.

What is your favorite Sports Team and Why?

Well, well well… the Dallas Cowboys… Not only did they win 5 Super Bowls, but they are also the embodiment of Perfection and Precision.  I’m also a big fan of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders because I Love to dance.

What is your favorite Quote? What does it mean to you?

The Quality of your thinking determines the Quality of your Life. Success is measured by effort. Live with Purpose and Meaning and do the right thing even when it’s Unpopular or uncomfortable.
