Teachers give too much homework
March 3, 2016
Dear Editor,
The amount of homework teachers give is too darn high! Ai??Seriously, weai??i??re in school for like 7 hours then some people have work after school, on top of all that we have to come home to do homework. Ai??Iai??i??d like to thank teachers who donai??i??t make homework a requirement. Ai??It makes things much easier.
In the case of math teachers, they will assign you so many problems a night that use the same formula or procedure. Ai??I understand how it works after the first 10 problems, there is no need for me to do anymore. Ai??Perhaps if teachers assigned less homework iai??i??d be more inclined to do it.

I agree with Long’s views on how much homework is given by teachers. He immediately gets to the point by stating “The amount of homework teachers give is too darn high!”. This shows just how strongly he feels about the workload that teachers put on students and it attempts to make others feel that way too. However, I feel that he fails to make a strong argument because of his lack of specific examples.

The article I decided to write about was the one about how teachers give their students too much homework. I would like to start off by saying that this article was decently done and I do agree with the writer’s opinion on the case of receiving too much homework, but the writer included some things in the article to make him lose some credibility in his writing style. For starters, the use of his grammar and word choice seemed a little bit less than above par to be submitted; using words like “like” in an inappropriate fashion, as if he were a teenage girl, and not capitalizing the contraction “I’d”. Though the article is opinion based and its purpose is to pose his idea, his lack of grammatical correctness causes him to lose credibility to a small degree. Although his mistakes were minor, he is able to regain some credibility by relating to the reader; students have to go to work after school sometimes so the heavy workload of homework can be an issue to deal with if the student does not have the time to complete the assignment. He also made a credible choice in his simple word choice and keeping the article short; the short article made it a simple read for the reader and it allowed him to made his point quick and painless, keeping the reader’s attention the whole time and possibly have them agree with him. Though there were minor casualties in this article with the spelling and grammar, the author was able to succeed in his goal of stating how teachers assign too much homework, including similar points of view of the people and relatable ideas, making him and his piece pretty credible to the reader.

One of the letters I read urged teachers to start giving less homework: and I agree. The writer said “Seriously, we’re in school for like 7 hours then some people have work after school, on top of all that we have to come home to do homework” (Long) which is completely accurate. Not only math teachers, but many teachers love to pile on homework as if students only take their class. Additionally, students need to have time for their brain to rest; a student doing homework from the time they get home until they go to bed (usually very late) does not give their brain or body the proper rest it requires. Therefore, I agree with the writer in that some teachers do give way too much homework.
